I spread out the stitches on my right-hand needle before I create a stitch in the new color by pulling them away from the point of the needle, about as far apart as they’d actually be if the fabric was being stretched a bit. This way I leave a float that is close to the width of the fabric or just a bit wider, which leaves room for a bit of stretchiness in the completed fabric. Of course, be careful not to pull this stitch tight when you’re knitting it, or you’ll undo the good of spreading out the stitches leading up to it.

You use the same method whether you are making a color change on the knit or the purl side of your work. Years ago, when I was first learning to knit intarsia, I would find that my yarn changes looked a bit crummy from the front. So, studious girl that I am, I began reading every book I could find on the subject of intarsia (um, there really aren’t that many) to see how I could perfect my technique. I tried every method suggested and could still never get the front of my work to look right, until I finally realized that the front side of intarsia never looks very good while you are knitting it and won’t reach true beauty until after it’s been blocked and the edge stitches have been adjusted (see “Nip/Tuck,” page 20).

Third, most folks choose to reinforce the area around the cutting line with sewing or crocheting before even picking up a pair of scissors.
