Moreover, although students retain 70 percent of what is said in the first ten minutes of a lecture, they only retain 20 percent in the last ten minutes (McKeachie, 1986). It's no wonder that participants in a lecture-based introductory psychology course knew only 8 percent more than a control group who had never taken the course at all (Rickard, Rogers, Ellis, and Beidleman, 1988).

Better yet, if we can do something with the information, we can obtain feedback about how well we understand. Learning is enhanced if people are asked to do the following: 1. State the information in their own words 2. Give examples of it 3. Recognize it in various guises and circumstances 4. See connections between it and other facts or ideas 5. Make use of it in various ways 6. Foresee some of its consequences 7. State its opposite or converse In many ways, our brain is like a computer and we are its users.

The key to effective training, however, is how the learning activities are designed so that the participants acquire knowledge and skill rather than merely receive them.
