Preservation of food was another problem which was solved only slowly and gradually. Over the centuries, navies learnt how to prepare food for longdistance operations, various types of barrels and packing were developed and store facilities below deck were improved. This did not solve the problem of unbalanced food, especially the lack of vitamin C. This could only be helped by a regular supply of fresh food, especially vegetables and citrus fruits, which was often difficult to organize. Even in the eighteenth century scurvy was a major problem during extended operations at sea.
