A case can perhaps be made for any political strategy, and nobody can guarantee what would happen, but the point is that if librarians see their first responsibility as being not to their own careers and profession but to the institution, they may not only be wrong in terms of long-range impact, but more importantly they will have abdicated much of their professional control. Should keeping libraries open be our first priority?

We teach them so that they can serve themselves. Much of the emphasis on bibliographic instruction is to develop library users who can function on their own. Special librarians, whose own contribution to the objectives of the organization may be measured more tangibly, complain that their users, who come to them largely from the academic community, are passive, accept low levels of service without complaint, and have no expectation of professional interaction. Their only expectation is for the development of a collection, and that the library purchase materials not for the library but for immediate transfer to their own offices.

The two cannot be separated. I wish I could be more confident that this will happen, but the leadership for this difficult journey has yet to emerge.
