When a person is in a depressive episode but has a history of previous manic episodes, the appropriate psychiatric diagnosis is “bipolar disorder” (formerly “manic-depressive illness”), and the treatment of the current depressive episode is once again different from the two other types of depression discussed previously. In this example, a type of medicine called a “mood stabilizer” is necessary. Counseling is also warranted, although it would likely focus on different issues than those presented by a person without a history of a manic episode.
