A considerable number of wings were produced by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gutbrod (Gutbrod working pool) in a converted tunnel of the Reichsautobahn (Reich superhighway) at Leonberg, near Stuttgart. A total of 2,189 prisoners from Konzentrationslager(concentration camps) and Zwangsarbeiter (forced laborers) were involved in the manufacture of wings in the tunnel. Messerschmitt AG made wide use of KZ-Haftlinge (concentration camp prisoners), most of whom were supplied by the Waffen 55-owned Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH (German Earth and Stone Works Company).
The leading edge slat of the Me 262A-1a was comprised of three independent sections. A single slat was attached to the wing leading edge between fuselage and engine nacelle. The slat shown here is fully deployed. This was the standard setting for takeoff or landing. The outboard end of the inner leading edge slat, adjacent to the engine nacelle, reveals its cross-section. Aft of the gearbox housing is the fuel regulator. Above the red 'N' is the drive motor for the nozzle cone. The boxes located below the drive motor comprise the ignition system.
