Both hybridity and creolization urgently seek to subvert, invert, and where possible, replace (as a palimpsest replaces) Enlightenment and colonial ideologies of race, identity, and aesthetics. One of my main assertions in this book is that James uses theories of creolization and hybridity in most aspects of his writing. Through a series of readings, I show that James’s aesthetic sensibility is uniquely and at times paradoxically stitched from the cloth of creolization and hybridity. But what does it mean to link aesthetics and creolization and hybridity?

The European Enlightenment sense of aesthetics seeks to understand a work of art as being able to definitively signify a universal experience. In contrast, creolization understands art, culture, and language in a radically different manner. Unlike Enlightenment philosophy, which concerned itself with the creation of totalizing grand narratives—and interpreted the world as built on absolutes, on binary oppositions (especially of self and other), the postmodern perspective of creolization understands, without an inherent compulsion to classify, the cultures and politics of the Caribbean as complex and layered.

That terror, James’s interpretation of the “masters’” reaction, signals the recognition of a dialectical position in which the masters, in producing this slave population, are also producing their own downfall: “the ruling minority therefore was in the position of the father who produced children and had to guard against being supplanted by them” (Jacobins 405). This oblique discussion of creolization in Jacobins, then, should also be understood as related to some of the influential conclusions that Homi Bhabha has reached regarding hybridity and the postcolonial condition.
